Alabama 2nd US Congressional District - Does Anybody Care?
By JBC | April 25, 2008
It is generally believed by political junkies, such as me, that other Americans have at least a peripheral interest in elections for important political positions like members of the United States House of Representatives. I have come to the conclusion that we are delusional.
Although I have struggled with a feeling somewhere between extreme nausea and unbelievable anger while following our inept and silly national media coverage of the 2008 Presidential campaign, I made a decision to remain engaged, if for no other reason than to remain hopeful that Americans would make better and more thoughtful decisions about their choices of Congressmen and Senators than their “lesser of two evils” approach to the national dog and pony show. No such luck.
Alabama will hold primary party elections for US Congressional seats on June 3rd. Since this is only five weeks or so from now, I fully expected to find tons of information on each candidate, and very specific information to be able to discern the best candidate from a rather crowded field from both major parties. I was wrong. Media coverage in the “Wiregrass Area” has been unbelievably quiet on this subject. If you actually care, you can read the official sites of the candidates, and try to sift through the vague garbage to find out what they really mean. This, of course, has been made intentionally difficult by the candidates for obvious reasons. Much like Barrack Obama prefers to repeat the word change as often as possible to a careful explanation of his actual understanding of America’s present domestic and foreign standing, and his plans to address America’s present problems, Alabama’s Congressional delegates prefer to feed useless and soothing pabulum to Lower Alabama’s populace, instead of telling us just how far removed our Southern ideals are from those currently espoused in Washington DC.
Who is at fault? Well, the media, including our own local newspapers and television stations, prefer to cover stories of celebrity, perversion, and athletics. Their elitist media view is that Joe and Jane Possum care more about Britney Spears’ most recent indiscretion or one of the state universities’ football recruiting status than the policies and decisions which will either protect or endanger our children’s future. Are they correct? Unless pressure is exerted on our local media outlets to make an attempt to provide us with more information on those things that truly affect our future, they will continue to treat us as thumb-sucking and beer-swilling imbeciles oblivious to the machinations of the power elites that control our destinies. Until we demand that they respond to our concerns, we will be forced to imbibe the Obama-esque repetitive anti-intellectual swill from Congressional candidates who stand for nothing other than their own empowerment.
This is not the Alabama I read about in history books. These are not the Southern men and women traditionally known for their political acumen and discerning intellect. Will we wake up in time to attend our own funeral?
