Real ID Equals Big Brother

State leaders spent a great deal of time grumbling about unfunded mandates during their most recent annual meeting of the National Governors’ Association in Michigan. They are, quite understandably, very upset that Congress and the President continue to heap tons of requirements onto their shoulders without coming up with the requisite funding to properly execute them.
One of the most troublesome and costly of these unfunded mandates is the “Real ID” program. This particular federal mandate is tantamount to a national identification card. The federal government wants easy, verifiable, and counterfit-proof identification for all legal citizens, supposedly to more easily identify those who have entered into the country illegally. To increase the accuracy of identification, the cards will presumably include biometric data (possibly to include fingerprints and medical history) and RFID (radio-frequency identification) chips.
Some of you may be thinking that these little devices will be able to make our country more secure, AND can have the added benefit of having wonderful applications for emergency care, etc. Mmmmyeahhh. Sure…but what about the possibility of having government agencies track your whereabouts 24 hours a day? What about the compromise of very sensitive private medical information? Do you really want to invite Big Brother into your wallet?
I hope that activists in all the states continue to rally against this invasion of our privacy. We can solve the terrorist and border invasion situations by enforcing laws which we already have on the books. Why take away more individual freedom from our citizens with an act that can be ignored like all of our other laws against illegal immigration, but which will remain in effect to track legal citizens? This is a slippery slope leading to a police state. Wake up America, Big Brother is just around the corner!
