Baby Steps…after 34 years
By JBC | April 20, 2007
Maybe the Supreme Court FINALLY gets it. Maybe there is actually something positive about George Bush’s presidency. Maybe the liberals will lose their minds.
On April 18th, during the wall-to-wall media frenzy in Blacksburg, a monumental decision was made that could save many more human beings than were lost in the tragedy at Virginia Tech. The United States Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, decided to uphold a federal law, passed by Congress and signed by President G.W. Bush in 2003, prohibiting one form of abortion. This law prohibits the “partial birth abortion” procedure (the extraction of a baby’s body, with the exception of the head, which is left in the womb until it is crushed), except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger. How ANYONE could condone such a procedure is beyond my comprehension. I have a better understanding of the thought processes of Cho Seung-Hui than Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The logic is that this “procedure” is the safest way to prevent damage to the uterus in late term abortions. But, this isn’t really an abortion…the baby is birthed, but the head is not allowed to exit…it is really infanticide, of a gruesome variety.
Ruth Traitor Ginsburg said of the decision, “It tolerates, indeed applauds, federal intervention to ban nationwide a procedure found necessary and proper in certain cases by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.” It is only “necessary and proper”, because it prevents damage to the woman’s uterus while crushing the infant’s skull…I am not really understanding the “proper” argument here. I will, unbelievably, agree with her on one point…the idea that the decision “applauds” federal intervention. However, the only reason that federal intervention is necessary is due to a faulty, and unconstitutional, Supreme Court ruling in 1973.
At least the Supreme Court has shown, for the first time in 34 years, that life is valuable. Thank you, Samuel Alito. Thank you, Anton Scalia. Thank you, Clarence Thomas. Thank you, John Roberts. Thank you, Anthony Kennedy. And yes, ahem, I must even thank George W. Bush…who, against his will, decided to appoint Mr. Alito, after a conservative firestorm regarding his initial appointment of Harriet Myers.
The reaction from the Pro-Death lobby in Congress should be interesting.
