States’ Rights Under Attack Again from the GOP
By JBC | August 5, 2006
Does anybody in the GOP remember Ronald Reagan? You know, he was that affable, good looking, older gentleman who served as President. You remember, don’t you? He was the guy that brought the Soviet Union to her knees, instilled pride in the average American that was zapped by the malaise of the previous administration, and promoted states’ rights. Yes, he thought that the Constitution meant something, and that local and state governments could better handle issues that were rightfully within their domain according to the Founding Fathers. Wow, it does seem like a long time ago, huh?
In the latest effort to consolidate power in Washington, President Shrub and the Congressional members of the War Party of Lincoln are proposing that the executive be allowed to take control of National Guard units during emergencies, WITHOUT PRIOR CONSENT from the Governors. Luckily, some Governors still believe in the Constitution, even if their political parties do not. They are fighting back, and hopefully this proposal will go away.
In the recent past, Americans were only frightened by left-wing of the Democratic Party’s attempts to further centralize American power through unconstitutional programs to benefit the poor or some other supposedly “at risk” group. These days, we should all be afraid of donkeys and elephants, and should demand that elected members of both parties uphold the beloved document and its delineation of powers and obligations. There is NO GREATER THREAT to our life and liberty than a completely centralized government with unlimited powers. If you doubt my words, please read those put forth by Jefferson, Madison, or Reagan.
