The Tide is Turning

By JBC | November 7, 2005

mescotThe Grand Ole Party has begun to see the effects of the abandonment of “middle America”. Recent polls show that more than 50% of Americans have lost faith in the ability of the President and the Republican Party to handle any specific aspect of the nation’s affairs. Even when asked which major political party is most trusted to carry out the “war on terror”, Americans are evenly divided between the two major parties. This last statistic is particularly troublesome for the neocon faithful. While the GOP expected to lose support over intervention in Iraq and higher gas prices, they are relying on the continued support of a patriotic base while tens of thousands of troops are still in harm’s way.

Neocons have underestimated America’s still-existent, although dormant for decades, non-interventionist core. They have also underestimated our desire to protect our borders as a logical extension of our anti-terrorist activities abroad. The Bush-led minions have even underestimated our desire to have a strict constructionist on the Supreme Court. Given that the President, his cabinet, and GOP leaders have so little knowledge about the needs and beliefs of “middle America”, is it surprising that Bush has lost their support?
