First Lady of the Trailer Park
By JBC | May 9, 2005
I am trying to imagine Martha Washington telling America that the Father of the Country groped a male horse while she was at a disreputable establishment lusting after lesser men. If this had happened, do you think that it - a) would have made him appear more human or b) would have been a good argument for King George’s return?
Thirty years ago the American populace would have overwhelmingly picked the second option. However, in today’s pornography-infested world this sort of inane “comedy” is proffered to make our First Couple appear more human. Actually, what this really means is that it makes them appear more like us. This means they appear coarser, less intellectual and more prone to baser desires.
In the days of JFK America hoped and dreamed of Camelot in Washington. Yes, yes, yes…in retrospect we know that he was little better, and perhaps much worse, than Billy Bob Clinton. However, America wasn’t aware of all of his nocturnal activities. America saw a very well-spoken and well-mannered man with a beautiful and seemingly intelligent wife. They seemed like royalty to the 40-hour work week crowd.
Today, we don’t want that. We want Paris Hilton and The Rock in the White House. I think Americans, at least today’s Americans, would feel really good about themselves if we had a stupid skank and an untalented half-wit at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I really do. It seems that many Americans have been so robbed of common dignity and grace through the coarsening of the media which has inundated our lives over the past half-century, that we only wish to feel like we aren’t the only ones that are immoral and common. We want leaders that are not only “one of us”, but even more so…because they are supposed to represent us.
If we can understand this, we can understand the appeal of Billy Bob Clinton and the ridiculous attempt by Laura Bush to portray her husband as the same type of character.
